Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon Wrap-Up

How do I even begin this…

This was literally me last night trying to push through the last few hours. I’m kind of disappointed to admit that the readathon proved to be more difficult than I had anticipated it to be. But, here’s my “wrap-up” anyways. I did a total of 6 updates on my bookstagram throughout the event, and thought I’d compile them all here.

β€’ Day 23 of #celineandfarahapril16 is series you won't finish β€’ I've never met a series that I don't intend to finish. So I don't really have anything for today's prompt. Instead, here's a photo of my pile of the physical books I intend to at LEAST start for Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon. I'm currently reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls but I have it as an ebook. Another ebook on my list is Attachments by Rainbow Rowell. This is my first time participating in this readathon and I honestly have no idea what to expect in terms of how successful I'll be by the end of the 24 hours. You can add me on snapchat (leslieslibrary) if you want to see my live updates throughout the 24 hours. You can watch me potentially fail miserably πŸ™ƒ Who else is participating in this readathon?! Let's buddy up so I can have some personal motivation please 😭 asking for a friend πŸ†˜ #bookstagram#ghostly#audreyniffenegger#verylefreak#rachelcohn#everythingseventual#stephenking#inpraiseofwolves#RDLawrence#drjekyllandmrhyde#robertlouisstevenson#agameofthrones#georgerrmartin#asongoficeandfire#stacksofbooks#igreads#instabooks#bookstagramfeature#thefinchbook#bookblog#bookblogger#bookphotography#deweys24hourreadathon#TBR#nationalbookday#readathon

As you can see, I had quite a stack that I THOUGHT I was going to demolish for this read-a-thon.

We're finally on Hour 4 of Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon, 20 more hours to go! πŸ˜… I'm taking a quick but needed coffee break, as you can see. A little update: I'm having a TAD BIT of a difficult time balancing my attention between reading, and being active with the other participants of the readathon. I want to just crank it out and focus on NOTHING else but my book, but at the same time, I want to be involved in the mini challenges and check out some of the other participants' entries, TBRs, etc. Are you guys okay with me doing this? The mini updates every now and then? I don't want to clog up your feed with so many photos, but if you don't mind, then I'll take photos here and there to update you guys! And also to document this experience for myself ☺️ so I can look back on my Instagram one day and take a stroll down memory lane. #bookstagram#booksandcoffee#deweys24hourreadathon#hourfour#ereader#ebook#bookphotography#bookblog#bookblogger#miniupdate#currentlyreading#currentread

I was doing pretty well in the beginning, I’d say. A little distracted, but still well nonetheless. I’d say I was going steady there for the first 4 hours.

We're now on Hour 7 for Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon! The mini challenge for this hour is to make a post featuring the thing that stops you from reading most. And mine is none other than the great interweb πŸ˜‚ I can easily get distracted from reading by checking out my blog, my social media (bookstagram to be more specific), and just the Internet in general! I know I'm not the only one, though πŸ‘€ the Internet can be very distracting to many! Also my little update: I've gotten further on The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls but I think I'm going to be taking a break soon and reading a short story from Ghostly. I also REALLY need to stop getting so distracted 😩 If you want to check out my blogβ€”which you should πŸ˜‰β€”the link is in my bio, where it's always been! Lol. #bookstagram#ghostly#audreyniffenegger#shortstories#ghoststories#horrorbook#bookphotpgraphy#bookblog#bookblogger#bookphotography#igreads#instabooks#booksofinstagram#bookish#bookaccount#bookporn#avidreader#bibliophile#thefinchbook#readathon#winsoulless#readblock#deweys24hourreadathon#hour7

Comes Hour 7 and I was just completely distracted. I was starting to feel kind of discouraged, to be honest. I saw that the other participants were breezing right through some of their reads and reading impressive amounts of pages in an hour. And I was just sitting there like:

More updates from Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon: Phew πŸ˜… Hour 9, 15 more hours to go! The mini challenge for Hour 9 was to share either a funny, romantic, or inspiring quote from one of the books in my TBR pile for this readathon. I'm currently reading Stephen King's short story called "L.T.'s Theory of Pets" from his book Everything's Eventual. I actually JUST came across what I thought was a funny quotation 😝 so here it is: Cats are different, though. A cat won't curry favor even if it's in their best interests to do so. A cat can't be a hypocrite. If more preachers were like cats, this would be a religious country again. Hahaha πŸ±πŸ˜‚ I do agree though. Cats are full of sass! Any cat lovers here?! Are you a cat person or a dog person? πŸ‘€ #bookstagram#everythingseventual#stephenking#LTstheoryofpets#catlover#deweys24hourreadathon#hour9#bookblog#bookblogger#igreads#instabooks#thefinchbook#bookandflower#bookandblooms#bookphotography#booksofinstagram#bookporn#avidreader#bibliophile#bookish#bookaccount#funnyquotes#readathon

By Hour 9, I still hadΒ not finished the one and only book I’ve started. So I decided to pick another one up. Everything’s Eventual is a compilation of short stories from Stephen King. So I thought I’d read one of the short stories and give myself a little break from what I was currently reading (which was The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls).

We're now finally halfway through Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon! Update: I'm a little sad to admit that this readathon has proven to be more difficult than I had anticipated. I can't seem to escape the distractions! I've moved on to a different book: Very LeFreak by Rachel Cohn. I still have not finished ONE book πŸ™ƒ I'm almost done with The Glass Castle though! And Very LeFreak seems like it's going to be a quicker read (or maybe not, since I'm apparently a bad judge of how long a book can take) *eye twitch* πŸ˜€ I'm still pushing through though! At least now I know what to expect for when I participate again next time. I've also posted my answers to the Mid-Event Survey up on my blog. As usual, link in my bio! #bookstagram#verylefreak#rachelcohn#contemporarybooks#teenfiction#igreads#instabooks#bookblog#bookblogger#avidreader#bookporn#bibliophile#bookphotography#thefinchbook#bookstagramfeature#booksofinstagram#bookish#bookaccount#readathon#bookstagramfeature#hour12

There I go…semi-admitting defeat. Lol.

It's almost midnight where I am (EST) and we're now approaching Hour 17 of Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon… *loses touch with reality* How. Am I. Still. Alive?! πŸ™ƒ I'm going to need another cup of coffee if I've got to keep this up for 7 more hours. I've now resorted to bringing my book in the bathroom with me because THERE IS NO SINGLE MINUTE TO WASTE, PEOPLE! πŸ’†πŸ» β€’ Oh, I've finally finished ONE book. Wow. Okay. Nice. Only 17 hours later. No big deal.. πŸ†˜ #sendhelp #bookstagram#drjekyllandmrhyde#robertlouisstevenson#scholastic#classicliterature#classicbooks#bookphotography#bookporn#avidreader#bibliophile#igreads#bookstagramfeature#thefinchbook#instabooks#booksofinstagram#bookish#bookaccount#bookblog#bookblogger#readathon#deweys24hourreadathon

This was the last update that I posted. After finishing my second book (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde), I gave myself a break…and…kind of…just…

Β Now for the End of Event Survey:

1.) Which hour was most daunting for you?

The first 12 hours… I was WAY too distracted.

2.) Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?

I personally only finished two books during this read-a-thon, but I do have some books that I think would keep the participants for next year engaged.

Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling
Any one of the Series of Unfortunate Event Series books by Lemony Snicket
Any one of Colleen Hoover books if you’re a big fan of romance books!

3.) Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next season?

I signed up to be cheered for via Twitter but only got one cheer 😦 I wasn’t so sure how it was supposed to work… Was I supposed to tweet live updates of my progress in order to be cheered on? I honestly just thought I would have people cheering me on twitter whether or not I was tweeting updates.

4.) What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon?

I thought the mini-challenges were awesome! They were all super creative and definitely engaging! Well done on those πŸ™‚

5.) How many books did you read?

I only ended up reading two.

6.) What were the names of the books you read?

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson

7.) Which book did you enjoy most?

I’m not so sure. I think I’d have to say The Glass Castle, though, if I really had to choose between the two. It was a lot longer and it was nothing less than a humbling read.

8.) Which did you enjoy least?

Well I guess this leaves me with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Lol.

9.) How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?

I am most likely going to participate again in the read-a-thon next year. I think I’m going to stick with being a reader. I want to give next year another go and plan better so I can read more than two books!

There you all have it! Not only was this my first time participating in Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon, this was also my first time participating in a readathon at all in general! Now, if you’ll excuse me… I’d like to gather back some of my grip on reality that I lost yesterday…

  1. Congratulations on completing the readathon! I may have to join in next time. Although by the sounds of it it is a real challenge lol. Well done for pushing through ☺

    1. Thank you! And yes, it really was a challenge! It was a lot more difficult than I had expected but nonetheless, the experience was definitely worth it πŸ™‚ It’s something to talk about one day, that’s for sure.

  2. Leslie! Oh, you should have twitted me if you felt discouraged! I would have cheered you up πŸ˜‰ πŸ™‚ Yeah, the cheering this year was so WEIRD! I didn’t even understand what the hell it was about on twitter. Usually it was on blogs .. so booh. Haven’t seen one cheerleader, and I was twitting a lot. No clue. As for everyone reading so fast.. I did the math of it and holy shit these people are machines! That is why you should not compare πŸ˜› πŸ˜‰ I set my goal to 1000 pages (and thought I would fail) and in the end I read 960 pages! Which was a success for me! πŸ™‚ But I literally read all 24 hours. And thanks for leaving your blog URL on my Quote challenge πŸ™‚ I, however, did not have time to check blogs during the readathon. Was hardcore in reading πŸ˜€

Hope I will see you again in October πŸ˜‰

    1. Yeah the cheering thing was weird for me! I mean, I wasn’t as active on Twitter during the read-a-thon BECAUSE I was reading, or just checking blogs and instagram post… I thought the cheerleaders were just going to go and cheer everyone on Twitter who left their username. But haha I wasn’t sure how it was really supposed to work. It’s okay though, it was still a pretty cool experience trying to read for an ENTIRE day πŸ™‚ I will definitely be trying again in October!
